Hanbury Announces Newest Promotions

Around this time each year, we celebrate the emerging leaders within the firm. In their daily work and interactions with clients, consultants, colleagues and the community, these individuals embody our core values of collaboration, curiosity, nourishment, integrity, and fiscal responsibility; and exceed the expectations of their roles.

Lisa J. Syfrett, CDFA | Associate, Senior Assistant Project Manager

Lisa's strong drive to see the firm succeed is not only evident in her accomplishments, but also in the support she provides to colleagues in their pursuits. A vital manager of contracts, requests for information and submittals, Lisa generously shares her knowledge and best practices within Hanbury and beyond. As president of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Society for Design Administration, Lisa works to elevate administrators across the region by encouraging continuing education and advocating for the value of the role. Because of her selfless dedication to excellence, Lisa provides significant contributions to our projects, firm and clients.

New Associates: Our new group of Associates embody the diverse spirit and enthusiasm of Hanbury through their work, their commitment to the profession, our culture and the communities we work. Their contributions continue to make the firm one of the best to work for and to work with, and we are happy to celebrate each of them.

Austin Chappell | Designer

Austin is uniquely committed to design excellence – within Hanbury and our community. He consistently elevates the design conversation within the studio – pushing beyond the common for a unique and innovative solution. His influence is enhancing our internal design culture and firm image as an innovation expert. Outside of the firm, Austin gives back as an AIA Triangle mentor, an ACE mentor, and by lending his knowledge to set up a compost program at the Raleigh CityFarm. He also tested his confidence in the power of design with a non-profit apparel campaign that raised almost $10,000 for restaurant and music-venue staff disaffected by COVID shutdowns.

R. David Cole, AIA | Senior Design Architect

In less than two years, David has demonstrated how his broad academic background in architecture, combined with his experience as a business owner and construction knowledge, is a valued asset to our clients. His drive and creative approach is shaping many of our most challenging projects as well as our firm culture.

Ryan Cooper | Designer

We knew Ryan pushed the limits of what is possible when we hired the recent NC State Masters of Architecture graduate who had simultaneously participated in the intensive national IPAL (Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure) internship. Ryan has a zeal for meaningful design and its iterative process and believes that the best solutions come from tricky constraints, diverse perspectives, and pushing the limits of design in order to learn from mistakes. His design ideas are powerful and compelling to even our most exacting clients.

Lauren Eaton | Laboratory Planner

In addition to providing laboratory and research spaces where Hanbury clients thrive, Lauren's commitment to the ACE Mentor Program in Raleigh provides an innovative way of attracting students, particularly minorities, women and low-income populations into careers in the architecture, construction and engineering industry. This is certainly true in her work at Hanbury where Lauren cultivates interest and growth in younger staff and strengthens our lab planning practice by freely sharing her experience and knowledge.

Kenneth Johnston, Associate AIA | Designer

Since joining the firm in 2019, Kenneth has been an integral team member on many of the firm's largest student residence hall projects. Kenneth’s exceptional and quick design solutions propel each project he touches. His commitment to learning and critical thinking make him an asset at each phase of our work. His contributions also extend beyond the firm to the profession as evidenced in his recognition as an Emerging Leader in Architecture of Virginia, by the Commonwealth's AIA.

Eric Mitchell | Designer

Eric also joined the firm in 2020 and also has a background in construction. As an architect and a licensed general contractor, Hanbury benefits from the efficiencies and functions gained through his design-build-test process. This passion for R&D translates to his innovative work in both technology and building science.

Amelia Murphy | Designer

Amelia is a highly motivated, dedicated, and lively designer with a focus on, and passion for, all things related to design. Her innate drive to help others complements her ability to actively listen and deeply consider clients’ wants and needs. Teams depend on Amelia for her attention to detail, creative problem-solving skills, and even her comedic relief. Amelia’s interpersonal and leadership skills are brought to every engagement and prove to be a tremendous benefit in providing the best project outcomes.

Every Hanbury employee adds value to the firm in their own way, and we take pride in celebrating their achievements. These promotions reflect the contributions each has made to the firm and our community while exceeding our clients’ needs. Collectively, our diversity of skills and interests makes our firm more successful and interesting – and, ultimately, a place where we can all grow personally, professionally, and thrive.
