S. Michael Evans Virginia Design Medalist

Named in honor of Mike Evans, founding member of the firm, President and CEO Emeritus and a member of the firm for 37 years, the Virginia Design Medalist program nurtures and stimulates our design talent by recognizing distinguished members of architecture, planning, and design academia and inviting them to engage with our staff for several weeks during the summer. The program is inspired by Mike’s passion for lifelong learning, research and continuous growth.

Participation in this program represents an opportunity for Hanbury to benefit from an academic lens on its work and an opportunity for professors to step back into the practitioners' world. Honorees spend several weeks with the firm engaged in the design of current projects, critiquing work, and delivering lectures, both formal and informal. One lecture is typically open to members of the regional AIA, providing additional dialogue between the theoretical and practical aspects of design. Each Virginia Design Medalist is awarded a medal to commemorate their time with the firm along with an honorarium, travel and lodging expenses.
