New Principals

Anna Carpenter, AIA, LEED AP BD+C is a collaborative architect who excels as a peer mentor. She is committed to her clients and projects, ensuring that she meets her responsibilities and provides support to those around her. Anna serves as a valuable liaison to clients, serving as a strong ambassador for the firm and its goals. She demonstrates exceptional skills in managing challenging budgets, complex renovations, and consultant coordination. While focusing on project management, Anna also possesses a keen eye for design. Anna's leadership and character contribute significantly to client satisfaction, design excellence, and successful project execution. She is proficient in all aspects of project delivery and is respected as a leader on her teams at Hanbury.

Chris Charles, AIA has been a valuable member of the firm since 2004, bringing exceptional organizational, technical, and communication skills to every project team. His expertise spans various projects, including campus housing, dining, and performing arts. Chris has demonstrated his integral role in design teams, particularly in construction observation and documentation. He extends his talents beyond Hanbury, volunteering his time to support his alma mater, Hampton University, and various philanthropic organizations in his community. As a long-standing team member, Chris has evolved into a client leader and lead project manager, securing projects at Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, and the Virginia African American Cultural Center. Through his influential voice on the Leadership Council, Chris consistently delivers outstanding results, earning high regard for his expertise and dedication.

George Kemper, AIA is a nationally recognized leader in the fields of S&T and Laboratory Planning. He plays a pivotal role in training our laboratory planning team and other firm members, contributing heavily to market leadership. George excels in project acquisition, leading the programming and design of laboratory spaces, and documenting his work with expertise. George's passion lies in developing a deep understanding of his research clients and designing spaces that enhance their efficiency and inspire them. In his role as Laboratory Planning Director, he continuously evaluates ways to optimize lab organization, safety, energy efficiency, and collaboration. George also serves as a national resource on lab space planning, frequently sharing his knowledge as a prolific speaker and published author.

James Benson, AIA NCIDQ, CPSM, MBA, LEED AP BD+C is a highly skilled communicator who excels at building strong client relationships. With exceptional interpersonal abilities, he listens attentively, exceeding client expectations. James has a natural talent for putting clients at ease and making them feel valued and heard. As the Operations Director for the Raleigh office and a permanent member of the Hanbury Leadership Team, he demonstrates strong leadership, implementing strategies for long-term success. In addition to his dedication to excellence and trusted leadership, James excels in business development, project management, and client management, making him integral to the firm's success.

Julia Janaro, AIA, LEED AP, WELL AP serves as the Director of Sustainable Design at Hanbury where she champions the integration of sustainability principles into every project, Julia leads the firm in creating environmentally conscious designs that challenge conventional notions of sustainable design. Her exceptional leadership inspires collaboration and empowers team members to think innovatively. Julia's expertise extends beyond Hanbury, as she actively shares her knowledge through thought leadership initiatives and industry engagements. Additionally, she fosters strong client relationships and drives the firm's commitment to design excellence.

 

New Associate Principals

Ashley Montgomery, Associate AIA brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her multifaceted roles within the firm. As a member of the Strategic Council and co-leader of the Holistic Design Group, Ashley consistently contributes a thoughtful and informed perspective to drive innovation and excellence. Her mentorship of summer scholars and coordination of the Virginia Sea Grant Research Fellows program showcases her dedication to fostering talent and advancing research initiatives. With her involvement in the Technical Advisory Committee for the Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Plan, Ashley has established herself as a recognized leader in environmental and community resiliency. Ashley's genuine approach to collaboration, mentorship, and research continues to build impactful client relationships and community partnerships, positioning the firm as a trusted advisor and thought leader in resilience and community-based planning.

Mike Beaver is a highly experienced senior project manager who has been a valuable member of the Hanbury team since 1997. With a focus on project production, document standards, and budget and schedule monitoring, Mike plays an active role in firm leadership. His effectiveness as a project manager and unparalleled skills as a job captain has earned him respect from clients, consultants, and team members. Mike's extensive technical knowledge and broad experience make him an invaluable resource for tackling tough technical challenges and conducting difficult code assessments. Driven by his passion for the firm's success, Mike's expertise, thoroughness and meticulous documentation consistently mitigate risks and contribute to the reliability of every project he is involved in.

An Liu (Designer), Alicia Hernandez (Graphic Designer + Marketing Coordinator), Angie Bailey (Marketing Coordinator), Mario Gandia (Graphic Designer + Visualization Specialist) and Tiffany Brannon (Human Resources Administrator) have all been recognized as Associates for their exceptional work, dedication, and leadership within the firm.
